Abortion and the people who need them are under constant attack in Lousiana.
This November, we have a chance to fight back.

For decades, anti-abortion lawmakers in Louisiana have stopped at nothing to deny us access to abortion, enacting 89 restrictions on abortion care - more restrictions than any other state in the country.

Just this year, Louisiana politicians have forced us to fight two cruel anti-choice attacks - one was a state law that made it all the way up to the Supreme Court  and now a ballot amendment that Louisianans will vote on in November.

Amendment 1 would take away Louisianans’ right to abortion in our state constitution – our right to make decisions for our own lives, bodies, and families.

Here is the exact language you will see on your ballot:

“Nothing in this constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.”

Voting NO will keep this harmful language OUT of our state constitution.

How this amendment could harm people in Louisiana:

This amendment will make it harder to protect our rights and fight future abortion restrictions. People in Louisiana will be forced to bring pregnancies to term that they do not want -- and will lose their right to make decisions for their own lives, bodies, and families.

  • It harms people. All laws that restrict access to comprehensive health care, including abortion, harm Louisianans. These restrictions are not about health, they are about politics.

  • It harms families and communities. Abortion access impacts more than just individuals. Two-thirds of NOAF clients are already parents. The ability to terminate an unwanted pregnancy impacts a person’s children, partners, extended families, and communities.

  • It is extreme. It includes no exceptions, even in the case of rape, incest, or threat to life. This will make it easier for Louisiana politicians to ban abortion without any exceptions.

  • It unfairly targets people already fighting to access healthcare.  Abortion is NOT covered by healthcare plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. 51% of households in Louisiana live paycheck to paycheck.  People should never have to decide between accessing their healthcare and paying their rent on time.

People in Louisiana have borne the brunt of anti-abortion legislation for decades, and at NOAF we see the direct impacts of those laws every single day among our callers. Louisiana is already the most hostile state in the country for abortion access. This November we fight back.
